At Shelby Humane Society, we take in stray and surrendered animals free of charge for Shelby County residents. We care for those animals and provide them with shelter, food and much needed affection. We spay and neuter our pets, provide them with necessary medical care including vaccinations, heartworm tests, microchips and much more to promote a long and happy life.
Every SHS pet will be spayed or neutered prior to leaving our shelter. We have many altered animals that are available to go home the same day that their adoption is approved. Cats and dogs that have not been fixed will be scheduled for surgery the next business day and must be picked up from SHS at a later date.
Adoption fees are as follows and cover the care that we have given your soon-to-be pet.
- Puppies under six months: $100
- Dogs over six months: $75
- Kittens under six months: $60
- Cats over six months: $35
So what’s included in the adoption fee?
Barn Cat Program – Shelby Humane Society sometimes has cats who cannot live as house pets. Cats in our barn cat program may be shy or fearful of people, independent and prefer the outdoor life or have poor litterbox habits. These cats do not have other options. Our barn cat program is ideal for property owners with barns and outside buildings. Having a barn cat or cats will help keep down the rodent population. And, because these cats are already spayed/neutered, you won’t have to worry about endless litters of kittens appearing!
All cats available for adoption to barns are spayed/neutered (ear tipped if feral) and vaccinated. Adoption fees are waived on these cats but donations to help cover their medical cost are appreciated.
